• Following IUD placement, no tampon or sex for 3 days. The IUD is effective immediately after placement; however this period of time is necessary to allow the string to soften.
  • Return to the office 4 weeks after placement to have your string checked by the physician.
  • Expect your current cycle to be heavier with more cramping and to last longer.
  • Remember, irregular bleeding is normal for the first several months after placement. This means that the bleeding may come and go. Your IUD is releasing progesterone inside of your uterus. This thins out the lining (the blood you shed during your period) and the blood has to be released from below.
  • In the majority of women, the bleeding ceases around 3 months. However, in a few women it will continue for several months
  • Several months after IUD is placed, periods typically are lighter and shorter with less cramping. This is typically the response, but everyone is different and this may vary for each individual patient.
  • After placement call your physician if you have severe pelvic pain, an excessive increase in blood flow or run a temperature greater than 101°.
  • After placement some women may not have a period at all.
